Counterfeiting (banknotes and coins)

Article 28 of the Constitution of the United Mexican States makes the minting of coins and issuance of banknotes the responsibility of the State. As a result money enjoys credibility and trust as a payment instrument and measure of value.

Given that it is the State that is empowered to provide the economy with domestic currency, a banknote made by a person other than Banco de México or a coin made by a person other than the Mint of Mexico is called apocryphal or counterfeit, while an altered banknote or coin is one that is modified to give it a use other than a means of payment or measure of value.
