International reserves

International reserves are financial assets that the central bank invests abroad and can be easily converted into a means of payment. As a result their main characteristic is liquidity; in other words, the capacity of the assets that comprise them to settle payment obligations outside of our country in an expedite way.

In the case of Mexico, these assets belong to Banco de México, and article 18 of its governing Law states that the objective of international reserves is to help stabilize the local currency’s purchasing power.
