Numismatics is the science involving the study of coins. It is a science because it is not limited to the collection and classification of coins but rather uses them to explain diverse phenomena of human history. By extension today numismatics means not only the systematic study of coins but also banknotes, medals and other similar objects. The word numismatic comes from the Latin word numisma (coin), which in turn derives from the Greek word nomisma which comes from nomos meaning custom, convention or law. The value of money is the product of custom or convention, hence the Greek word for "convention" derives from the word used to refer to money.
