In the center field, the national shield with the inscription “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS” (UNITED MEXICAN STATES) along the top of the coin.

ReverseC_mon_1 peso - rev

In the center of the coin to the left, the symbol “$”, and to the right, the face value, one, “1”; top center, the mint year; to the right of the center, the Mexican mint mark “M.” As the key motif, a stylized image of the “Ring of Splendor of the Sun Stone”.

In circulation as of January 1st, 1996.

 

Composition

Bimetallic coin comprised of two alloys, one in the center of the coin and the other in its periphery, as follows:

1. Center of the coin. Bronze-aluminum alloy.

  • 92% (ninety-two percent) copper;
  • 6% (six percent) aluminium; and
  • 2% (two percent) nickel.

This composition weighs 1.81 grams.

2. Peripheral ring of the coin. Stainless steel alloy.

  • Between 16% and 18% (sixteen and eighteen percent) chrome;
  • 0.75% (seventy-five basis points) nickel, maximum;
  • 0.12% (twelve basis points) carbon, maximum;
  • 1% (one percent) silicon, maximum;
  • 1% (one percent) manganese, maximum;
  • 0.03% (three basis points) sulfur, maximum;
  • 0.04% (four basis points) phosphorus, maximum; and
  • The remainder, iron.

This composition weighs 2.14 grams.
