In 1981 it was decided to mint coins containing 1, 1/2 and 1/4 ounces of pure gold. The obverse side of the three coins was to bear the National Shield and the reverse side was to have the same design as the centenario, i.e. the Winged Victory with the Popocatepetl and Ixtaccihuatl volcanoes on the background.
In 1991, the following gold coins were added: 1/10 and 1/20 oz.
