Security features in currently manufactured coins
Type of test Description
Touch test. Features that can be identified when you touch the coin.

The assembly of bimetallic coins
In the bimetallic coins denominated in 1, 2, 5, 10 and 100 pesos, the assembly of the peripheral ring is practically perfect, making the frontier between the two parts hardly noticeable to touch.

Edge
The edge of the coins can be smooth, grooved, or unevenly grooved. If there are burrs or other irregularities, it might be a counterfeit coin.

Edges of coins

Texture
A coin should have a smooth texture. If it is slippery or soapy, it could be a laminated coin, and therefore, false.

Visual test. Features that can be identified at sight.

Color
In coins, color is a unique characteristic of each alloy and is produced by the metals that comprise it. Color becomes fixed when the metals are melted and remains unchanged during the entire life of the coin. Mexican coins are not covered with anything, nor do they have metal plate or painting on the surface, and for this reason, they do not become discolored.

Brightness
Brightness is obtained during the minting of a coin, and as with color, it is a characteristic of each alloy.

Smoothness.
The surface of the coins free of engraving should be smooth, uniform and without porosity.

Wear and tear
The wear and tear on coins due to their daily use is uneven. Therefore, if you see a coin with homogeneous "wear and tear," or a lack of overall sharpness in the engraving, the coin could be counterfeit.

Comparison

If you doubt about the authenticity of a coin
, compare its weight, diameter and thickness with another which you are sure is authentic. Any noticeable difference in weight, diameter or thickness can indicate that it is counterfeit.
