Presumably counterfeit banknotes and coins taken in by financial institutions, legal and government entities, and companies throughout the country are in the end returned to Banco de México for an evaluation —that is, Banco de México analyzes them to determine if they really are counterfeit.
Banco de México has a database called the Currency Authentication System (SAM, for its initials in Spanish), in which the data on each and every one of the notes and coins received as well as each authenticity judgment, is registered. This database allows for the organization of information relating to counterfeiting in our country, of domestic as well as foreign currency, so that statistics and other information can be obtained. The database provide information on the manufacture and distribution of counterfeit money.
On the basis of the information contained in the SAM system, answers to the questions from various institutions that turn in banknotes and coins are also generated.
The information generated by the SAM system is shared with the Federal Attorney General´s Office, INTERPOL and the United States Secret Service (when U.S. dollars are involved), with the aim of providing data to investigations related to the crime of counterfeiting. When requested, this information is also shared with central banks from other countries. |
