Security features in the 50-peso polymer banknote

Elementos de seguridad en el billete de $50 de polímero


The surface of the note is noticeable to touch—that is, it can be felt with the fingertips. When the note is new, the relief is perceived more easily.
The note has images with inks that change color when you tilt the note slightly. On the front is a butterfly to the left-hand side, and this kind of ink is found in its wings.

To the right-hand side where the see-through window is found, there is a caterpillar with this kind of ink. The caterpillar, exhibiting the same effect, can also been seen on the back of the note.

These features are part of the polymer from the time of its manufacture.

The micro-printed texts are small words and/or numbers which can generally be read only with a magnifying glass. On the front and back the text “50PESOS” is repeated several times.

Also, the note has a diminishing micro-printed text, which consists of letters that decrease in size. The first row has the largest letter, which diminishes in size from one row to the next. You almost always need a magnifying glass to read the last rows.

This contains the text “50 PESOS” and is found to the left-hand side of the banknote (seen on the front). To observe it, you need to view the note against the light. The thread can be seen on both sides of the note. Like the watermark, this security feature is part of the polymer from the time of its manufacture.

The front and back of the banknotes have figures formed by lines of varying thickness and with varying spaces between them. Like the rest of the note, these are printed with lines and not dots. Thus, the images give their color to the note. Examples:

This consists of impressions made on both sides of the note which, seen against the light, complement each other exactly. In the 50-peso banknote the map of Mexico and the wind rose are formed.

This consists of an image of the bust-head figure of the note and is found to the right-hand side of the figure (seen from the front). To observe this security feature clearly, you should hold the note against the light. The image can be seen on both sides of the note. This security feature is part of the polymer from the time of its manufacture.

You can see the number 50 on top of diagonal lines. This feature is part of the intaglio printing and even deteriorated notes maintain the relief printing.

Polymer banknotes are printed on a substrate that does not shine under ultraviolet light (also known as "black light").
