Exchange of damaged or old banknotes and coins

Exchange centers for domestic banknotes and coins have been established in 549 bank branches in 203 locations in the country (*). They operate according to the rules (*) published in the Official Federal Gazette dated January 25, 1996. Any individual can go to these exchange centers in order to perform the following operations:

Exchange of domestic banknotes and/or coins for different denominations.

Evaluation of damaged banknotes, for example: incomplete and deformed notes, as well as receipt of payment for them (only in Mexican pesos), in cases in which they are still of some value.

Exchange of domestic coins and/or banknotes that have been demonetized or are in the process of being retired from circulation,  for equivalent coins or notes that are currently in circulation.
Send to Banco de México, presumably counterfeit banknotes or coins for analysis, with a receipt made and given to the owner (*).

This service is free of charge and any individual can ask for it. In oher words, there is no need to be a bank client. However, in case that you are a bank client, such institution must give you these services and there is no need to visit an exchange center.

Each operation should not exceed 500 pieces (same denomination) or 3,000 pesos.

If you only need to exchange banknotes (fit ones and notes with some kind of damage but still keeping their value) for others of the same or different denomination you can visit any banknote exchange center.

For any complaints or comments concerning one of these exchange centers, call 01-800-733-5000 or send a message to dinero@banxico.org.mx
