With the aim of facilitating cash transactions by the general
public, Banco de México and the Mexican Bankers' Association decided to
establish, starting December 1, 2004, the banknote exchange service.
The service consists of responding to requests to
exchange banknotes currently in circulation for others of the same of different
denomination and has the following characteristics:
| |
 |
The service is provided at all bank branches except micro
branches, banking modules and branches located at department stores. |
| |
 |
Requests from the general public are attended who
do not necessarily have to be clients of the banks. |
| |
 |
The maximum amount for each operation is 3,000 pesos. |
| |
 |
It is possible to exchange high denominations for lower ones and vice versa. |
| |
 |
It is possible to exchange
banknotes with some kind of damage but still keeping their value. |
| |
 |
The service is free and is provided Mondays through Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to
12:00 p.m. |
This service was established to satisfy the public's demand for different banknote denominations in circulation, and thus to facilitate cash transactions.
Other cash-related services - such as exchange of
metal coins, demonetized banknotes, or banknotes in the process of being
withdrawn or deteriorated, valuation of incomplete banknotes, as well as sending presumably counterfeit pieces to Banco de México for an evaluation -
will be provided at the
exchange centers established at different branches throughout the country.
